On Thursday, May 18, 2006, from 6-9pm at B.E.D. NY, more than 400 New Yorkers join restaurateur Oliver Hoyos of B.E.D. NY and Don Kao of Project Reach in celebrating Project Reach’s 35th Anniversary of fighting racism, sexism, homophobia, age, gender identity, class, ability, immigrant, and AIDS discrimination.

From its grassroots inception in an Eldridge Street storefront in 1971, Project Reach has grown from working with Chinese youth gang members to working with all young people coming from New York City’s most disenfranchised and disparate youth communities.

Named “the most diverse, multiracial, multi-gender, grassroots, cross-community training model in the country”, Project Reach’s Social Justice Boot Camp brings together annually over 150 young people and staff from over 20 youth organizations who would otherwise never meet one another. This major fundraiser will support and expand this collaboration which is entering its third year. Community partners include:

Project Reach began 35 years ago in 1971. Founded by Asian American activists seeking to provide services to immigrant youth, it was a direct response to the rise in Chinese youth gangs. Over 20 years ago (1985) in an action unprecedented among race-segregated youth programs, it opened its doors to all young people and established innovative and dynamic multiracial training programs. The mission was to develop the capacity of New York City’s marginalized youth communities to understand their society, speak up for themselves, and organize to effect social change. Today, Project Reach is a youth and adult-run, community-based, drop-in and anti-discrimination training center and works with Black, Latina/o, Asian/South Asian, Native American, Arab/Middle Eastern, Multiracial and White youth; immigrant and undocumented youth; HIV+/young people living with AIDS; teen mothers and fathers; lesbian, gay, bisexual, Two Spirit, transgender youth. Most of the young people come from low/no-income families, raised by immigrant parents (Asian, Caribbean, Arab, Latin/Central American). Staff of Project Reach regularly speak and train nationally. Project Reach, under the auspices of the Chinese American Planning Council, is located at 1 Orchard Street, on the Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
